Our History

The School of Management traces its origins back to 1953, initially as the Economics Teaching and Research Office established by the former Beijing Institute of Mining’s Coal Mining Department. It began enrolling undergraduate students in 1954 and formed the Mining Engineering Economics Department in 1960. In 1970, the department was renamed to the Economics Department. Graduate education commenced with the establishment of the Beijing Graduate Division of the China Institute of Mining and Technology in 1978. In 1983, an Enterprise Management Research Office was re-established within this division, which was then renamed as the Committee for Economic Management Specialties in 1988. Following the establishment of China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing) in 1997, the Department of Economic Management was formed, which was later renamed as the School of Management in 2002. The school now comprises of the Departments of Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration, and Accounting, as well as the MBA (MEM) Education Center, MPAcc Education Center, and Advanced Business Management Training Center.

The school offers a relatively complete range of disciplines and specialties. It was one of the first institutions in China authorized to grant doctoral degrees in management studies, equipped with a post-doctoral research station in Management Science and Engineering, doctoral and master’s programs in Management Science and Engineering, and master’s programs in Business Administration and Applied Economics. It has 4 academic doctoral specialties, 7 academic and 4 professional master’s specialties, and offers 3 undergraduate programs in Big Data Management and Application, Business Administration, and Accounting. In the fourth round of disciplinary assessments conducted by the Ministry of Education, Management Science and Engineering received a grade of B+. The undergraduate programs in Accounting and Business Administration became national-level first-class undergraduate specialties.

The school prides itself on a teaching staff with reasonable structure and high qualifications. Presently, it has 64 faculty and staff members, including 53 full-time teachers. Among the faculty, 17 hold senior professional titles, 21 associate senior titles, 21 are doctoral supervisors, and 36 are master’s supervisors, with 98% holding doctoral degrees. The school is home to 9 exceptional talents at the provincial and ministerial level, including "Beijing Famous Teachers". Committed to research-led education, the school continually enhances its educational environment and capabilities. In the past five years, it has initiated 25 national-level projects such as the National Key R&D Program and over 30 provincial and ministerial-level projects in humanities and social sciences. The school has received more than 50 research awards at the provincial level or higher, established 17 national standards, published over 60 works and textbooks, and authored more than 870 teaching and academic papers, including over 220 indexed by SCI, EI, and CSSCI. At present, there are 909 undergraduate students, 1112 master’s students, and 141 doctoral students.

The school is committed to improving the quality of talent cultivation. It persistently refines talent training programs, advances teaching reforms, and enhances students' comprehensive qualities. In the past three years, the school has obtained 1 national first-class course, 3 high-quality courses in Beijing, 1 education and teaching reform project in Beijing, and 1 pioneer project of the “New Liberal Arts Initiative” by Ministry of Education. Students have received over 200 provincial-level awards and over 80 various academic competition awards. The school is an authorized partner for the Master of Engineering Management and IPMP qualification training, and a training base for International Project Management (IPMP) talents.

The school emphasizes scientific research work and has established several research platforms such as the China Energy Industry Development Research Institute, China Coal Economics Research Institute, Decision Sciences and Big Data Research Institute, Smart Finance Research Center, and Resources and Environment Policy Research Center. In the past two years, it has initiated over 120 various projects in the fields of energy economic management, quality management and standardization, safety management, and informatization, receiving 9 provincial-level awards. The school has published 12 monographs and textbooks and over 157 high-level academic papers, with an average annual research budget of nearly 10 million yuan, placing it among the forefront of management schools in China in terms of per capita research funding.

The school actively strengthens international exchanges and cooperation. It conducts domestic and international academic exchanges, engages in deep collaboration with universities and research institutions at home and abroad, and participates in the establishment of the Emergency Management Science and Engineering Research Institute of the Ministry of Emergency Management, the China Ecological Economics Academic Research Alliance, and the China University Energy Economics Management Innovation Strategic Alliance. Through collaboration with renowned enterprises and alumni companies, it has established over 100 off-campus internship practice bases and co-hosted professional manager training courses for the coal industry with the China Coal Industry Association.

The school also places a strong emphasis on party building and ideological and cultural construction. By fully enhancing the party's leadership, promoting the modernization of governance systems and capabilities of the school, building a comprehensive ideological and political work system.
